You aren’t presenting anything that hasn’t been presented already — and in more detail — in the last several years.
“But if half the people in that queue are only there to purchase a limited edition Bowie record they’ll flip on eBay for £200…” — While I’m sure you’re trying to make a point, this is flat-out inaccurate. Half the people shopping at RSD are there to flip records? Not true. Chris Brown, the creator of Record Store Day, has gone on record saying the number of releases being turned on eBay, et al. is a small percentage compared to what’s sold to actual fans.
Also, you act as though RSD is a once-a-year thing. It’s not. Have you heard of Vinyl Tuesday? Labels do limited runs of pressings every single week, all year long. To bemoan limited runs is silly; isn’t that one of the great things about collecting? Sure, not everything needs to be limited — and not everything is limited — but why shouldn’t fans get excited to get one of just a few hundred copies of a new album?
